The foundation stone
‘Blood Transfusion in Europe : The White Book 2005’

Building a periodical ‘White Book’ reporting on the updated status of blood transfusion in the EU and figuring out new approaches on main topics is what the 7th commitment of the EuroNet-TMS network is about.

In 2005, the White Book in European Blood Transfusion showcased the status of regulations stemming from the EU health authorities, as well as blood transfusion practices and figures from the European countries covered by the EuroNet-TMS network.

The new White Book in Blood Transfusion edition: a close EuroNet-TMS / EBA collaboration

The second edition, to be published in 2011 with the active and close collaboration of the EBA (European Blood Alliance) members, will enhance multiple discrepancies as noticed throughout Europe and at all stages of blood transfusion.

Other current ‘burning’ issues will be dealt with, such as :

  • responsibility level in the transfusion act (e.g. Who does What in Which country ?)
  • standardization process of Initial Medical Training and Continuous Medical Education,
  • claim for a medical ‘specialty’ status for blood transfusion.

Will also be dealt with in this new edition the impact of 4 European directives, clinical aspects and indications of blood components, hæmovigilance, not to forget improvements brought about since 2005.

Its 23 chapters will therefore be most interestingly propped with the EBA ‘field’ experience and documented with specific investigation outcome such as the DOMAINE (Donor Management in Europe) survey.

A meeting was set up on 11 June 2010 with the kind organization support of the SIMTI (Società Italiana di Medicina Trasfusionale e Immunoematologia) during its Congress in Milan.

Next meeting towards the 2011 White Book completion will be set up on 11 February 2011 pm in Amsterdam, with the kind help and assistance of Dr. Jeroen de Wit, Chairman to the EBA.

The date was also chosen with the possibility for all members to combine with attending

the 13th International
Haemovigilance Seminar

under the aegis of ISBT (International Society of Blood Transfusion)
IHN (International Haemovigilance Network)
and TRIP (Transfusion Reactions In Patients)
