Higher education - University degrees
The first higher education courses in blood transfusion in France were delivered in 1975 by the INTS. A decree implemented in 1976 indeed set forth the DUTS (Higher Degree in Blood Transfusion) as a joint diploma from Pierre et Marie Curie University and the "French National Centre of Blood Transfusion" which became the INTS in 1994. The INTS pursues its initial teaching assignment in collaboration with several universities. More specifically, these universities, in conjunction with the INTS, offer a Higher integrated curriculum in blood transfusion (CIUTS).
Initial curricula in blood transfusion implemented by these Universities :

  • René Descartes - Paris V
  • Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris VI
  • Denis Diderot - Paris VII
  • Jules Verne – Amiens

These curricula are delivered in collaboration with the teachers of the previously quoted universities, and those from Paris XI – Paris XII – Paris XIII - Bordeaux II - Lille II – Nantes – Rennes I – Saint Etienne – Strasbourg– Versailles Universities as well.

Also in collaboration with teachers from the following associated structures : Ecole d’Application du Service de Santé des Armées (Administration school for the healthcare of armed forces) – Centre de Transfusion Sanguine des Armées (Blood transfusion centre of armed forces)– Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique (School for higher public healthcare) – Agence Française de Sécurité des Produits de Santé (French agency for health product safety) – Institut de Veille Sanitaire (National institute for public health surveillance) – Laboratoire Français du Fractionnement et des Biotechnologies (French laboratory for fractionation and biotechnologies) – Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (Public welfare Paris hospitals) – Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Marseille (Public welfare Marseille hospitals) - Direction Générale de la Santé (National health executive) – Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (National institute for health and medical research) – Etablissement Français du Sang (French blood establishment) – Agences Régionales de Santé (Regional health and welfare bureaux in Auvergne, Bretagne, Franche-Comté, Ile de France, Languedoc-Roussillon, Lorraine, Nord, Pas de Calais, Normandie, PACA, Pays de Loire, Picardie).

This curriculum is composed of 25 modules (M1 to M25) as follows:

C.I.U.T.S.
The CIUTS (Higher integrated curriculum in blood transfusion) is unique in Europe. It is delivered by the INTS (French national institute of blood transfusion) in collaboration with different universities.
This curriculum is composed of 25 modules. According to his/her objectives and the number of modules he/she is registered in, the student is likely to apply to one of the following higher degrees:
D.U.T.S. – Blood Transfusion University Degree
Coordinator : Prof. Philippe ROUGER (Paris VI University)
This Doctorate-level university degree is delivered by the Paris VI University. Courses are coordinated by the INTS and are meant for future executives, MDs, PharmDs and scientists from the EFS (French Blood Establishment) or associated laboratories.
C.T.T. – Transfusion Technology Capacity
Coordinator : Prof. Philippe ROUGER (Paris VI University)
This national degree allows MDs, non resident and consequently not having passed the DES or DESC, to bear responsibilities in transfusion, in blood transfusion establishments or hospitals.
D.E.S.C. – Specialized degree in Haemobiology-Transfusion
Coordinator : Prof. Philippe ROUGER (Paris VI University)
This national degree is a vocational curriculum meant for residents or former residents. The DESC curriculum encompasses the DUTS. Duration : 2 years, of which 1 as a resident.
D.3T. - Inter-university degree for ‘therapeutic principles in transfusion technology’
Coordinators : Prof. Philippe ROUGER (Paris VI University), Prof. Jean-Luc WAUTIER (Paris VII University), Prof. Jean-Jacques LEFRERE (Amiens University)
This degree has been implemented in 2004-2005, in substitution to the DUMT (University Degree of Transfusion Medicine), in conjunction between Paris VI, Paris VII and Picardie Jules Verne – Amiens Universities. It is meant for the MDs or PharmDs in charge of a blood repository or responsible for Haemovigilance inside their establishment.
D.F.Q. - University degree for Continuous Improvement and Quality implementation
Coordinator: Dr. François TRAPADOUX
Initiated since the 2010-2011 university new term, this 140-hour graduating curriculum is meant for biologists, quality managers or their staff, wishing to get trained and reach for a practical experience of the laboratory-implemented ISO 19011, 15189, 17025, 22870 accreditation, securing its permanence thanks to technical and quality evaluations as imposed by the regulations in force and the COFRAC (French accreditation institution) policies.
Applications to register (cover letter + detailed resume) should be sent to :

D.U.Q.S.P.S. - University degree for quality and safety of blood components
Coordinator : Prof. Dominique VIGNON (Paris V University)
Meant for MDs and PharmDs, this curriculum aims at teaching not only the bases in transfusion safety and quality but also an in-depth knowledge in blood derivatives. It is set up by Paris V University – Prof. Dominique Vignon, d.vignon@hopital-foch.org
